Sydney – Top player Alexander Zverev tied for the German players in the ATP Cup match with Great Britain.
The 24-year-old from Hamburg won against 12th on the world ranking list Cameron Norrie 7: 6 (7: 2), 6: 1 and thus ensured a successful start to the new year. With a 1: 1, the German men’s team enters the decisive double. Before Zverev’s appearance, Jan-Lennard Struff had clearly lost 1: 6, 2: 6 against Daniel Evans.
Zverev also in action in doubles
Contrary to expectations, Zverev also competed in doubles. The world number three replaced stunt specialist Tim Pütz in no time. With Kevin Krawietz, Zverev is related to Evans and Jamie Murray.
The other German opponents in the preliminary round on Tuesday and Thursday are Canada and the United States. The four winners of the four groups of four reach the semifinals. With the ATP Cup, tennis professionals prepare for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 17 in Melbourne. Zverev has set himself the goal of winning his first Grand Slam title there.
