Meta removes Facebook News tab in UK, France and Germany

Meta has announced the withdrawal, before the end of the year, of the Facebook News tab in its main European markets: France, the United Kingdom and Germany.

It’s a page that’s turning. American social media giant Meta announced on September 5 that it would end the Facebook News tab, available on Facebook, at the end of the year. A decision that affects its main European markets: the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

While users of the world’s largest social network will still be able to read and share news in their news feed, Meta will no longer support the “news” tab and will no longer enter into agreements with news publishers to provide content in these countries that have more than 130 million users, the company said in a blog post.

The Silicon Valley giant has endured several legal battles around the world with lawmakers and media organizations accusing it, like other digital giants, of profiting from its content without returning a fair share of its advertising revenue.

Stay away from news content

In Canada, Meta banned users from viewing or sharing links to news articles in early September after the government passed a law requiring the platform to compensate content providers. In its blog post, Meta also emphasized that its overall strategy for Facebook was to take a step back from news-related content.

“We know that people don’t come to Facebook for news and political content. They come to connect with people and discover new opportunities, passions and interests,” the company wrote.

“News accounts for less than 3% of what people around the world see in their Facebook News Feed, so news discovery is just a small part of the Facebook experience for the vast majority of people.” “Meta further pleaded.
