What happens to your money?

Boris Becker worked on his rehabilitation with an important television interview. But the 55-year-old’s insolvency proceedings continue. So what happens to his money?

It was a phrase that made people sit up and take notice. Steven Gätjen announced the interview with Boris Becker on Tuesday evening saying, among other things, that he wanted to talk about Sat.1’s fees and “what will happen to it in the future.” The money issue is evident for a man who was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for bankruptcy crimes.

Gätjen’s motto raises hope: “We will ask questions without mercy,” said the interviewer before starting the conversation. But after about two hours of conversation, we concluded that there was no discussion about the fee. News about Boris Becker’s personal bankruptcy? Also missing.

“The interview was broadcast as it was conducted”

When asked by t-online, the broadcaster was silent. “The interview was broadcast as it took place,” the station’s spokesman, Christoph Körfer, told t-online, highlighting that “many aspects” were part of the conversation. Lack of money: From the station’s point of view, it is not a problem.

There is also no information on the amount of fees that Boris Becker received for his participation in the Sat.1 special: “Confidentiality is a valuable asset that Sat.1 and our contractual partners have highly valued for years. “That’s why we won No we cite contracts,” he says briefly.

Several media outlets, including “Spiegel” and “Bild”, reported half a million euros. But neither Sat.1 nor Becker comment on this. But one thing is certain: for Boris Becker, making money has only just begun. Other income comes from television contracts and marketing his prison story.

In addition to Sat.1, Apple TV+ has also achieved a collaboration with Becker. It is not yet clear when the two-part documentary about the tennis legend will be screened. The format is based “on three years of exclusive access to Becker prior to his sentencing in April 2022” and includes, among other things, an interview with him shortly before his incarceration. Here you can read more about it.

Becker doesn’t have to worry about his professional future. The vice president of the German Tennis Federation had already made it clear weeks ago: “The doors of the DTB will always be open for Boris Becker.” Becker worked as “Head of Men’s Tennis” for the German association from 2017 to 2020. Vice President Dirk Hordorff could imagine that the former professional athlete would take on this role again, but also as a “representative, executive committee or whatever. To put it bluntly: Boris can choose the position.”

“I don’t know if I’ll stay in Europe”

Boris Becker spoke about his future plans in the interview on Saturday the 1st: “I want to have 25 good years ahead of me.” It is also said that he has already closed a contract to publish a book. You can find more information here: “This is how Boris Becker should now raise millions.” However, Becker does not believe that he will settle back in Germany. “I don’t know if I’ll stay in Europe.” Becker is not currently allowed to travel to Britain due to his expulsion. He named Miami and Dubai as places he liked.

At the end of April, Becker was sentenced to 30 months in prison for insolvency offences, of which 15 months were suspended. He but he was released last week after less than eight months in prison. This was possible thanks to a special rule for foreign prisoners. You can read more about the background and why Boris Becker was lucky that his heart’s desire never came true here.

Becker pleaded not guilty at the trial in London. On Saturday the 1st he admitted his guilt for the first time and admitted: “I won 25 points and lost four points.” The jury that convicted him considered as its main argument that he had stolen money from a company account. He also kept secret, among other things, his mother’s house in his hometown of Leimen.
