Temperatures will rise significantly starting next week. The peak of the heat wave is expected to be reached on Tuesday.
A heat wave with maximum values of up to 40 degrees is approaching Germany in the next few days. On Sunday there will be plenty of sunshine across the country, the German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Saturday. The densest clouds could only break through in the north.
According to meteorologists, the highest temperatures are reached in the southwest. There they should rise from 25 to 31 degrees. In the north and east, the maximum values are between 20 and 24 degrees. At night on Monday it cools from 16 to 8 degrees.
The week starts sunny with loose clouds. According to the DWD, temperatures will rise to 29 to 34 degrees on Monday, while in the West and Southwest it should be as high as 36 degrees. The coasts, however, were spared from the heat. In these regions, meteorologists expect 20 to 25 degrees.
On Tuesday, the DWD expects the preliminary peak of the heat wave. In the Southwest and West, the 40-degree mark may be cracked. In the northeast, the maximum values are between 30 and 34 degrees. Showers could appear in the far west and southwest on Wednesday night, and individual storms cannot be ruled out.
UK weather alert for heat
In view of expected record temperatures in Britain, the national crisis team (Cobra) was convened on Saturday. Britain’s Met Office weather service had previously issued a red weather warning for parts of the country due to heat for the first time. Temperatures of up to 40 degrees are expected across much of England between London and Manchester on Monday and Tuesday next week. The previous temperature record is 38.7 degrees and was measured in Cambridge in 2019.
The UKHSA health authority warned of health risks even for healthy and fit people. The elderly and the frail are particularly at risk. “It’s important to stay hydrated and seek shade whenever possible, when UV rays are at their highest, between 11am and 3pm,” said UKHSA expert Agostinho Sousa. London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced that he would provide additional help to the homeless.
