Technology – AI Summit: Businesses Commit to AI Safety – Business

Seoul (dpa) – Major US technology companies such as Google, Meta and Microsoft, as well as companies from other countries, pledged to use technology responsibly at the start of a summit on artificial intelligence (AI).

Major AI technology companies, including those in China and the United Arab Emirates, have pledged not to develop or use AI models in extreme cases if the risks cannot be adequately mitigated, the British government said. Britain and South Korea are hosting an AI summit in Seoul, the South Korean capital, which is scheduled until Wednesday.

The companies' commitments were supported by a broad statement from Seoul. He identified safety, innovation and inclusion as the three main objectives when discussing the opportunities and challenges presented by AI. Inclusion is about ensuring that the benefits of AI reach everyone. An agreement was also reached between ten countries and the EU to launch an international network to promote the “science of AI safety.”

Initially, a total of 16 global AI technology companies from Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East made a voluntary commitment to ensure the development of AI. The commitments came on the same day that EU states decided on stricter rules for AI.

“First time in the world”

Where they have not done so now, companies will publish their own security frameworks, it was said. The goal is to be able to measure the risks of your advanced AI models, including examining the risk of misuse. They are also determined to be open in their approach to AI safety. “It is a world first that so many leading AI companies from so many different parts of the world are agreeing to the same commitments to AI safety,” said British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The summit aims to build on the Bletchley Declaration, in which several states called for regulatory cooperation at the first AI safety summit held in Britain in November.

The first day of the summit in Seoul included a virtual meeting between Sunak and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, with representatives of the G7 group of leading democratic industrial nations and other countries. Representatives from technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Meta and Samsung were also invited.
