HISTORIC INFORMATION
2022 – After being arrested by the moral police, Mahsa Amini, 22, dies in a hospital in Tehran. Subsequent protests throughout Iran against the Islamic system of government are brutally repressed. Hundreds of people die and thousands are arrested.
2018: German eight wins gold at the World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The defending champions finish ahead of Australia and Great Britain.
2008: Porsche takes control of VW. The sports vehicle manufacturer increases its share to 35.14 percent. According to the Securities Takeover Act, VW is a subsidiary of Porsche Automobil Holding SE. Lower Saxony’s blocking minority of 20 percent remains.
1993 – In the trial for the deadly shootings on the inner German border, the Berlin district court sentenced former GDR Defense Minister Heinz Keßler to seven and a half years in prison. The Federal Court of Justice confirmed the sentence in 1994.
1978: A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in northeastern Iran kills up to 25,000 people. The city of Tabas and 40 villages are destroyed.
1963 – The Treaty on the “Federation of Malaysia” comes into force. The new State arises from the merger of the “Federation of Malaya”, Sarawak and Sabah.
1923 – The then mayor and later chancellor Konrad Adenauer opened Europe’s largest sports stadium to date in Cologne-Müngersdorf. It has capacity for 80,000 spectators.
1861 – “Fritz”, the largest steam forging hammer in Germany, begins operation at Friedrich Krupp’s cast steel factory.
1620 – The sailing ship “Mayflower” with Puritan emigrants from England, the so-called Pilgrim Fathers, sets sail from Plymouth, in southern England, and two months later arrives in North America, to what is now Provincetown, on the peninsula of Cape Cod (today in the US state of Massachusetts).
