Christian Eriksen is set to sign a six-month deal with Brentford to make a remarkable return to the Premier League, just seven months after going into cardiac arrest.
Eriksen left Inter Milan by mutual consent last month after Italian medical authorities suspended him from playing in Serie A due to a rule that prohibited the use of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) that he had fitted.
The 29-year-old had the ICD implanted after going into cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland in Copenhagen. He has passed all the necessary medical check-ups and is fit to resume football.
Eriksen said his heart was “not an obstacle” to playing again, and in England athletes have the autonomy to decide for themselves whether or not to continue, depending on the balance of risks.
It is not illegal in the UK for Eriksen to play with an ICD and he will become the first to play with one in the Premier League.
Before joining Brentford, Eriksen had trained across the border in southern Switzerland, and last week he stepped up his preparations for a comeback by training with his old team Ajax.
Eriksen will be moving to Brentford with a strong Danish connection to the club. Manager Thomas Frank and his international teammates Christian Norgaard and Mathias Jensen are among Eriksen’s many acquaintances.
The midfielder will return to London after spending six and a half years at Tottenham before joining Inter in 2020.
Eriksen: I died for five minutes
Eriksen revealed earlier this month that he was “dead for five minutes” before being revived by doctors, who gave him life-saving treatment at the Copenhagen camp.
He also told the Danish channel. DR He wants to play in the World Cup this year.
Eriksen said: “My goal is to play the World Cup in Qatar. I want to play. That has been my mentality from the beginning. It is a goal, a dream.
“That they choose me is something else, but my dream is to return.
“Physically, I’m back in great shape. I want to show that I’ve evolved and that I can play for the national team again.
“It is up to the coach to assess my level, but my heart is not an obstacle. »
Last month, Eriksen’s agent, Martin Schoots, said Sky sports news the midfielder was “optimistic” about resuming his football career and had worked hard to play again.
World-class creative talent
Eriksen was the undisputed king of assists during his six-and-a-half-year spell with Tottenham, ranking among the best goalscorers and chance-makers in the Premier League during that time.
In addition, the Dane led the production of the spectacular with 23 goals scored from outside the area, leader in the league, eight of them from direct free kicks.
The chart below reveals his company’s illustrious elite, including Mesut Ozil, David Silva, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne, of whom only the latter would notably outperform Eriksen in creative returns by 90.
In terms of positioning, Eriksen frequently exceeded career metrics during his time at Tottenham and operated primarily centrally, in the opposing midfield, creating chances from all angles.
His creative output has dwindled at Inter Milan as he failed to secure a regular starting spot before his horrific collapse at Euro 2020 last year, but Eriksen is an undisputed world-class talent and a stellar addition to the team. by Thomas Frank.
