At developer conference: Google announces AI offensive

Google CEO Sundar Pichai

Google wants to improve its offerings across the board with artificial intelligence. In addition to the search engine, other apps like GMail and Maps should also get new features, CEO Sundar Pichai said at the Google I/O developer conference on Wednesday.

“We will use AI to massively improve our products,” he announced. Among other things, Pichai demonstrated how the software can formulate a letter to the user. He also showed how users of the Google Photos app can not only remove unwanted objects and people, but also change their own position in the image, for example.

In recent months, developer OpenAI has caused a stir with its ChatGPT chatbot, which can form sentences like a human. With a multibillion-dollar deal with OpenAI, Google’s arch-rival Microsoft is pushing the Internet group to make more of its own AI developments available to the public. Until now, Google has been reluctant to do so, citing responsible use of the technology. At the same time, Pichai stressed that Google has been working with artificial intelligence for years.
