UK’s first women-only portable urinal gets Rs 2.5 crore funding – Reuters

Fed up with long queues at public women’s urinals, two former University of Bristol students have created a portable women’s urinal that they both claim is six times faster to use than a conventional urinal. The planned project created in June 2021 has now received funding of £250,000, or around Rs 2.5 crore. Amber Probyn and Hazel McShane are the brains behind PEEQUAL, a portable female urinal, which is created from recycled marine plastics and reduces carbon emissions by 98% compared to traditional portable toilets. The funding the company has secured has come from big names like Tom Blomfield, founder of Monzo, a British design company, Sarah Jones, COO, GÜ, and Angel Investors, Chris Stamp and Elaine Groenestein. “I am proud to be an investor in PEEQUAL – it is important that women have access to fast, safe and durable toilets,” Blomfield told the BBC.

PEEQUAL urinals are semi-private urinals that are currently being deployed at various festivals and events in Great Britain. Multiple units are deployed to significantly reduce long lines at the women’s urinals at major events and programs. The funding PEEQUAL received came at a time when the company was in a make-or-break phase.

“Our funding was running out…so that was a deal breaker,” Amber said. Calling the funding life-changing, she added: “Now we’re getting to a point where we’re starting to manufacture, now we can employ other people, which is amazing, and start commercializing this business. Calling the funding a “great moment for equality around the world,” Hazel said the sum prompted a huge vote of confidence in PEEQUAL.

The money that PEEQUAL has raised will be used to accumulate volunteers who are willing to help the project grow. According to its creators, PEEQUAL is not only a product but also an inducer of a change in behavior and perception of women’s health.
