Tribute to Shane MacGowan: ARTE shows the documentary My Life with the Pogues – The Wild Career of Shane MacGowan in the ARTE media library arte.tv and on television. Strasbourg – Shane MacGowan, frontman of the legendary Irish-British band The Pogues, passed away on November 30, 2023 at the age of 65. He was a crazy troublemaker with Irish roots who moved to London to mix the emerging punk movement with Irish folk in underground clubs and pubs. ARTE changes its programming and will screen the documentary “My Life with the Pogues – The Wild Career of Shane MacGowan” on December 1, 2023 at 9:45 p.m., which is also available in the ARTE media library arte.tv.
“I was always in the right place at the right time.” From the niche of punk, Shane managed to give his compatriots a widely audible voice in the heated atmosphere of the Northern Ireland conflict, with a strength and uninhibition they had never had before. And as an aside, he created “Fairytale Of New York” in the style of an Irish folk ballad, one of the most listened to British Christmas songs of the 21st century.
Director and fellow punk rocker Julien Temple has created a monument to Shane with his documentary: a fireworks display featuring intimate recordings of British punk culture, including those from Temple’s own archives. In his film, Temple evokes the rise and fall of a genius brat who was catapulted out of his own gang by his excesses and ended up in a wheelchair.
