Toyota to produce its fifth-generation hybrid powertrain in Europe

Toyota Motor Europe has announced the start of production of its fifth-generation hybrid powertrain for the new Corolla.

This low-emission Toyota engine will be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK) sites before being installed in the new Corolla produced by TMUK and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (TMMT).

The start of production of the fifth-generation hybrid transmissions and engines follows the modernization of seven production lines carried out thanks to new investments of €77 million and €541,000 earmarked respectively for sites in Poland and the United Kingdom.

TMMP produces hybrid transmissions comprising the MG1 and MG2 engines, as well as the main electrical components of these transmissions. These products will be combined with the new TMUK-manufactured 1.8-litre petrol engine to form the fifth-generation hybrid powertrain.

This next-generation hybrid technology from Toyota incorporates lighter, more compact and more powerful electric motors, increasing the electric mode operation ratio of the hybrid system. Thanks to improvements made to the configuration of the combustion engine, the vehicle offers increased power, as well as overall performance and optimized traction, which translates into reduced CO2 emissions for the 1.8-litre version. Total output from the 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain is 140PS, which translates into a 0-100km/h acceleration time reduced from 1.7 seconds to 9.2 seconds.

The new hybrid powertrain replaces the fourth-generation system that the TMMP and TMUK sites have been producing since 2018 and 2016 respectively. In recent years, TME has accelerated its investment in hybrid technology, with its total electrified mix now accounting for 66%. of Toyota’s total sales. in Europe, compared to 30% four years ago.
