What if computers could heat your water and save you money? It is the idea of an English company that has just entered the large-scale testing phase. A project that should be accessible to everyone.

Heat your water for free

If the idea of heating your water for free may seem absurd, it is a reality that the Heata company wants to implement. Based in the UK, the company has developed a computer that connects to your hot water tank. Installation is quick and easy and made directly by the manufacturer. The craziest thing is that beyond the ecological aspect of the technology, Heata promises to save you about 230 euros on average per year in electricity costs.

According to his calculations and according to the production of electricity in England, this apparatus would save 1 ton of CO2/year per household. In other words, is the system a win-win? But there may be a little more to discover.

We can see the principle of operation in two ways: the computer that sends the calculation data over the Internet heats the water in the hot water tank, or the hot water tank cools the computer.

An innovation that is not at first sight

In 2021, the City of Paris installed a computerized heating system in an HLM residence. In winter, this innovation keeps your home at a good temperature. On the other hand, in summer, the computer can no longer work. This is truly a seasonal solution.

Heata’s proposal is to heat the water. Because actually, even in summer, nobody wants to take a shower with cold water. Therefore, the hot water tank remains just as important. The computers that heat the water can thus function all year round.

So we can ask ourselves if a simple computer is capable of heating enough water for an entire household. The answer is a bit mixed, because Heata promises an average production of 3.6 kWh of hot water per day. This represents 80% of the needs of an average English household. The rest of the energy is provided by the normal heating system of the hot water tank.

Here’s the great subtlety: The company doesn’t remove the resistance in the ball, it just adds supplementation to its system.

The biggest disadvantage at the moment is that the Internet connection must be high speed and you must provide it. In other words, if you’re not on fiber optics, you can’t. Not to mention that your bandwidth will be reduced. Heata, on the other hand, wants to limit her data consumption so as not to cause too much damage to her connection. In the future it is even planned to use a 4G, 5G or personal fiber connection to the company.

Finally, the last promise is to be able to remove the computer device without affecting the guarantee of the original hot water tank. This is a long time before and we will have to see the progress of the tests in England, before one day we can see it arrive in France.
