Ukrainian duo Tvorchi defended Kiev’s colors at the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night in Liverpool at the same time their western city of Ternopil was under Russian attack, according to local authorities.

The electro duo performed their title “Heart of Steel”, a song inspired by the resistance during a month of siege at the Azovstal factory in Mariupol and who finished sixth after being given a standing ovation by the public.

Minutes after his stage performance, Tvorchi posted on Instagram that Ternopil, his hometown, was attacked by Russia.

Ternopil “was bombed by Russia while we sang on the Eurovision stage about our strong hearts, our indomitability and our will,” they wrote. “Europe, united against evil for peace”, they added.

“The victims are in the hospital”

Overnight, an official from the military administration of Ternopil Volodymyr Trouch announced on his Telegram account strikes in warehouses in the city.

“There were strikes at warehouses belonging to trading companies and a religious organization,” he said, citing two injuries.

“They are wounds and burns from shrapnel. The victims are hospitalized,” added the official. “Firefighters are working on the scene (…) The fire is not completely extinguished yet,” he added. The president of the Ternopil regional council, Mykhailo Golovko, also reported a strike in the industrial zone of the city.

At the end of April, the Tvorchi group had to take refuge in shelters when an air raid siren sounded in kyiv, where they were due to act at the central station. At the end of the alert, the duo had unexpectedly performed in front of the surprised passengers in the station’s entrance hall.
