the new technology developed by BMW

Change the color of your car or the color of your jersey as you want and according to your mood: this is what this latest technological innovation offers you. The color of a car can change between different colors and will thus be customizable. This is the technology designed by BMW.

The German automaker has developed “E Ink” technology to give its users the ability to communicate with others, but also to add a decorative layer that can appear or disappear.

E Ink: how does the new technology that allows you to change the color of a car work?

E Ink consists of a layer of electronic paper with thousands of microcapsules containing two different pigments, each with a positive or negative charge. The capsules can therefore have, for example, positively charged black pigments and negatively charged pigments. Using a switch in the cabin, a positive or negative field is applied to the capsules that will move to opposite sides depending on the color chosen.

How do you apply an e-paper layer to something as large as a car? The electronic layer was designed with small diamond-shaped folds to cover three-dimensional objects.

The wonderful innovation was presented to the public for the first time at CES 2022 in Las Vegas in the iX Flow model. At CES 2023, the automaker offered a new model with this technology: the BMW i Vision Dee. In this new model, the choice between colors could be between 32 different colors!

Two patents relating to the customization of car colors have already been filed with the World Intellectual Property Organizationaccording to the media carburetor.

The regulations of each country will have to adapt to this new technology. For example, in the United States and the United Kingdom, drivers must inform the authorities and their insurer if they own a car of this type and what the predominant color of their choice will be.
