The EU reaches an agreement on the exchange of data with the United Kingdom

The European Union has reached an agreement on data exchange with the United Kingdom. After Brexit, there were options for this based on temporary decisions, but now there is more clarity on the long term.

The transition period associated with Brexit meant that the parties had to consider what data traffic would be like between the EU and the UK, for example. The UK is no longer obliged to comply with the GDPR, but is trying to act as closely as possible to the GDPR.

However, if you transfer data to the UK, that is to say outside the EU, it must be well protected there as well. The privacy shield, for example, helped with this, although it has been declared invalid since July 2020. However, the European Commission has now decided that the UK will comply with the GDPR in that way. As promised, it has opted for rules very close to the General Data Protection Regulation. The EU is happy with that, he writes EUObserver. There has even been a separate law on data in criminal cases, so data can still be shared between companies and between governments safely despite Brexit.

Several business organizations have already expressed their support for the European Union’s decision. The EU has previously made similar statements about Argentina, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand and Switzerland, which means that there is also a good relationship with those countries when it comes to data. Hopefully, the EU will soon find an alternative to the Privacy Shield, which will also make the United States a better place to share data.
