Keep your hats handy as the UK is set to become a cold weather playground, with freezing temperatures and snow to boot! Sledding, snow fights, and carrot-nosed men on display, so let it snow!
A weather map revealed by UK Met Office, reveals the exact day snow is expected to hit parts of the UK – and it's time to get out the gloves and hot chocolate. According to the Met Office, temperatures as low as -5°C are expected, which could increase the “risk of mortality” among older people.
Expect temperatures as low as –4°C in Scotland, -3°C in Walesand a generalized “glagla” of -2°C in England overnight.
Snow in southern England over the next week
On Saturday temperatures will increase slightly with maximums of 8°C. But hold on tight, because the mercury will drop to -5°C in some areas over the next two days, with most of England facing a winter-like -4°C.
Looking ahead to next week, the Met Office is warning of a possible appearance of snow on Wednesday in Scotland. By Thursday, snow could turn south, covering all of England and Wales before taking a break on Saturday.
National preparation for temperature drop
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns that this drop in temperature could make hospitals and the healthcare sector busier than usual. While many are already struggling to heat their homes, the UKHSA is offering some tips for staying warm.
To avoid becoming a snowman, the agency recommends pre-heating the house, reducing drafts and, of course, wearing several layers of clothing instead of just one. Schools are also at risk of closing, and teleworking will surely be recommended! Also, consider leaving earlier if you work outdoors because the roads will be more congested than usual.
