The palace then said in a statement:

“The Duchess of Edinburgh is deeply saddened to learn that Helen Holland has passed away.”

It goes on to say that the Duchess expresses her deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. Royal journalist Roya Nikkhah also wrote on Twitter that the duchess would contact Holland's family, but that this should not be done publicly.

Sophie herself did not notice the accident.
