Liz Truss stepped down as UK Prime Minister on Thursday after just 45 days. Britons may seek a new political leader for the fourth time in more than six years. These are the possible candidates mentioned.
Rishi Sunak
If Mart Smeets or Jack van Gelder had reported on British politics, Sunak would surely have been asked the question: “What is going through your mind at the moment?” Sunak, 42, lost to Truss in early September in the succession battle for the resigned Boris Johnson (more on him later).

In the electoral debates, Sunak has already warned about Truss’s fiscal plans. He predicted they would be disastrous, and he was right. Sunak was the most popular candidate among Conservative MPs. But when the party’s 170,000 members were allowed to vote, he didn’t stand a chance against Truss.
Sunak may still want to show that he was always the best option. So, of course, he must still feel like it, 45 days after his death. He has not yet made a public statement on the matter. But political allies are sure that he again I want to shoot
penny mordaunt
Mordaunt was the last to be eliminated in the previous elections before the duel between Truss and Sunak. Until the last primary, he was always in the top two. At the crucial moment, he was outmatched by Truss, who then also defeated Sunak.
With Truss resigning in record time, Mordaunt is the most obvious challenger of Sunak. She became one of Johnson’s fiercest opponents during Johnson’s tenure. Johnson and Sunak were often beaten for participating in illegal parties during lockdowns. Mordaunt called it “embarrassing”.
Mordaunt, 49, was previously the first female defense minister. She is seen in the halls as the person who can make the Conservative Party split again to connect.
jeremy hunt
Hunt has since made it known that he without regard to to track Truss. However, it is not inconceivable that the ambitious Hunt still candidate. He already tried to become party leader (and therefore prime minister) on behalf of the Conservatives in 2019. He then lost to Johnson. Earlier this year he did not participate in the battle for his succession.
After Kwasi Kwarteng’s resignation last week, Hunt was appointed Finance Minister. Hunt was already then “of the real ones Prime Minister”. The first thing he did was undo almost all of his predecessor’s tax plans. That also led to the pressure on Truss becoming too great.
Hunt, 55, was not particularly popular until now, even within his own party. one in common use nickname you get by replacing the first letter of their last name with a ‘C’. That produces an unkind English swear word. His early reign as finance minister seems to have earned him some popularity. But that’s not (yet) enough to run for the highest office.
Boris Johnson
Nothing would better embody the chaos in British politics than the return of Johnson. A few months after leaving the post of prime minister, his name is already circulating. And it’s more than whispers in the halls.
In his farewell speech, Johnson hinted that he thought he might have stayed on as prime minister. He is still very popular with many party members. Others are not expecting his return at all.
According to political commentators, Johnson has already decided to run. He would do believe that it is “a matter of national interest”. However, first try to gauge how much support you would actually have.
