See you in spring 2024! Precisely at this moment, Eole, the extension of the RER E to the west of Paris, should be inaugurated. In any case, its underground part runs a length of 8 km, between Haussmann – Saint-Lazare and Nanterre, passing through La Défense. However, initially this commissioning will be carried out “partial”to arrive in time for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Nothing to do with the infrastructure that will be ready in all cases. “As soon as it is inaugurated, more than 700,000 travelers a day will be able to pass through this new tunnel”, explains Xavier Gruz, director of the Eole project for SNCF Réseau. The objective of this new section of line: “change 15% of travelers from RER A to E, including the 12% who, at the Gare du Nord, go to Châtelet to take the A”.
In this expansion, the new Porte Maillot station will become a “transport center equivalent to that of Denfert-Rochereau”, according to the project director. Around 35,000 travelers will meet here every day and will be able to reach metro line 1, RER line C and soon also tram T3b, whose expansion is also underway, from the RER E.
At the foot of the Congress Palace, the traces of these monumental works are still clearly visible, although now more discreet. Future surface spaces are taking shape. Those at the metro station too.
