Pope Francis has been transferred to a hospital in Rome for an operation on the abdominal wall. He is expected to stay there for several days.
According to the Vatican, the Pope will be operated under anesthesia on Wednesday afternoon. That would be necessary because of a herniated scar, which causes him a lot of pain in his abdomen.
Francisco also had to go to the hospital on Tuesday for a check-up, but he was able to leave after forty minutes. The Pope had a fever just before Pentecost. At the end of March he was still hospitalized for respiratory problems due to a respiratory infection.
The Pope has been in poor health for some time. For example, he underwent surgery in 2021 for stomach problems. The 86-year-old leader of the Catholic Church has already said he could resign if he is no longer healthy enough for his job.
His predecessor Benedict XVI resigned in 2013 for health reasons. This was unusual: normally a Pope remains in office until he dies.
