Players face up to 14 years in prison for spreading secret tank plans

The British medium “UK Defense Journal” usually reports on matters related to military defense. But now, as an exception, he has devoted himself to the subject of video games. A gamer is said to have posted confidential documents about the British Challenger 2 main battle tank on the “War Thunder” video game forum. Supposedly as a protest sign that Russian developer Gaijin Entertainment’s depiction of the military vehicle in the game did not seem realistic enough to him.

The perpetrator criticized that the digital tank design was “not properly” modeled. The obsession with details and, above all, the dissemination of classified “confidential” information could have consequences that were probably not clear to you.

There is a risk of up to 14 years in prison.

The self-proclaimed game critic did not give his real name on the forum. He will be happy about it in hindsight. The person claims to be in command of a true Challenger 2 himself. It also revealed its location, if the information is correct: as a Royal Tank Regiment at Tidworth, Great Britain. The published data is believed to have come from the tank’s user manual. Many passages were blackened and a “secret” seal was recognized. Meanwhile, the information has been deleted again.

The operators of the “War Thunder” forum reacted: A moderator published a statement from the British Ministry of Defense. The ministry confirmed that the documents were classified as “confidential.” Transmission of such material could result in a prison sentence of up to 14 years. The game studio is apparently not planning any legal action, but wants to do so with its Statement Warn potential copycats. Gaijin Entertainment will not process original material unless it is publicly available and fully approved.
