Omikron keeps the public away from sports competitions until the end of January.

The Belgian Consultation Committee has decided today. Since Sunday morning, the public is no longer welcome at sports competitions, indoors or outdoors. And that also affects cyclocross. Dendermonde is the first of many victims, but the strictest measures apply until January 28.

No blocking, as in the Netherlands. But the stricter measures are also important in Belgium: cinemas, theaters and concert halls are closed, indoor activities are no longer allowed, except for museums and sports activities. However, the public can no longer perform these sporting activities.

Christmas markets are still allowed, as long as a good crowd controlbut not to the public at outdoor sports games. All the measures will take effect from Sunday morning, which specifically means for cyclo-cross that fans will not be able to attend cyclo-cross for the next six weeks.

Preventive
However, the booster vaccination in Belgium is going well. Four out of ten adults have already received that third vaccine. The infection figures are also decreasing, but on the other hand, the percentage of infections with the omikron variant is increasing. Then preventive measures were taken.

There is enough misunderstanding in cyclocross already. “We saw this coming,” says Christophe Impens de Golazo. “These are anything but fun times. Will the matches continue? I suppose so, but first we must consult with the mayors. And we have to look at the budgets. But it is a fact that, when there is a race, all parties will have to compromise: the organizers, the runners and the federation ”.

“Soccer failure”
Koen Monu, organizer of Heusden-Zolder, notes sporza blame football. “The images in the football stadiums have not been good,” he says. “The behavior of football fans has done nothing to convince the Advisory Committee that there are sports that can be organized. I think we are the victims ”.

Monu also sits with the mayor of Zolder and the director of the Circuit. But you say you don’t want to proceed with the cancellation. “Everything is ready, all contracts have been signed.”
