ESPOO (IT-Times) – Nokia announced today that it has signed an agreement with British network operator BT to supply 5G technology to build a super-fast mobile network in the UK.
The Finnish telecommunications provider Nokia has reached an agreement with the British telecommunications network operator BT plc. signed a 5G deal, making the company the UK’s largest infrastructure partner in 5G.
The agreement is also long-term and strategic. Under the terms of the agreement, Nokia will provide hardware and software, as well as services at BT radio sites across the UK.
The goal is to convert the existing radio access network from BT to 5G. BT’s Nokia network, which currently includes Greater London, the Midlands and rural areas, is expanding to a number of other UK cities.
The Finns benefit from BT’s commitment to the UK government to be selective in the use of High Risk Vendors (HRVs) in UK network infrastructure.
The British government in London has Chinese telecoms equipment supplier and Ericsson and Nokia rival Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. excluded as a supplier.
