Ten million people have already signed up to Threads, the Twitter competitor of Meta, the parent company of Instagram.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this on your own Threads account.
Threads opened Thursday in the United States and the United Kingdom, among others. The app is not yet available in the European Union, reportedly due to ambiguities surrounding European privacy law. Although Threads already works in Dutch, it is not clear when the app will appear here.
The app is released by Instagram. A Threads profile is linked to an existing Instagram account. The application has many similarities with Twitter. For example, the focus is on sharing text messages and following others. People can comment on each other’s posts, share and like them.
Theads appears just as Twitter is once again receiving a lot of criticism over policy changes. The owner, Elon Musk, decided last week to limit the number of messages Twitter users can see. Soon you will also have to pay for the Twitter program Tweetdeck, much to the discontent of many users.
Meta successfully copied apps before
With its 10 million members, Threads is nowhere near Twitter, which has more than 300 million. It’s also unclear how many people will remain active on Threads.
An account on Threads is linked to Instagram. To close a Threads account, you must delete your entire Instagram account.
Still, Threads is seen as a competitor to Twitter with a high chance of success. Meta successfully copied other’s features more frequently. For example, Instagram Stories was copied from Snapchat and Reels videos are a response to TikTok.
Zuckerberg hopes to have a billion Threads users. “That may take some time, but I think there is room for large-scale application around public debate,” he writes. “Twitter has had its chance, but to no avail. Hopefully we can do it.”
