Historic strikes in London in February 2023: what to expect?

Strike movements in the UK promise to be historic by February 2023. Public sector unions are calling on their members – nurses, teachers, paramedics, railway workers – to strike for higher wages and better working conditions .

Inflation is reducing the purchasing power of the British, pushing the latter to participate in large strikes that have paralyzed London and the United Kingdom since last month. The government, for its part, remains in its position, announcing that the current public finances do not allow an increase in the salaries of civil servants. Therefore, the standoff is likely to continue if a compromise is not found in the coming weeks.

The first week of February 2023 was marked by the biggest strike movement in a decade. On February 1, it brought together several hundred thousand teachers, university staff, railway workers, transport staff, but above all members of the PCS Union (Public and Commercial Services), the union that represents the public health system in the United Kingdom.

After this period of unprecedented strikes, what should we expect for the rest of February?

HE Monday, February 6, GMB and Unite Unions ambulance staff go on strike. Strikes only affect calls where there is no danger of death.

HE Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 February Members of the Royal College of Nursing, the union representing nurses, will go on strike until February 7. Lifesaving care will continue and all emergency and intensive care nurses are expected to work.

The turn of the physiotherapists covered by the National Health Service as well as the Kynés of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (union of physiotherapists of the United Kingdom) to go on strike in Thursday, February 9.

HE Thursday 9 and Friday 10 February staff at more than 150 British universities go on strike. This strike is led by the University and College Union (UCU), the British union of higher education workers. If you are a student in the UK, ask your teachers and administration, your courses may be cancelled, postponed or taught online.

HE Friday, February 10, ambulance staff also went on strike. Again, only non-life-threatening calls will be affected.

Members of the ASLEF union, the machinists union, are called to strike in Saturday February 11. This strike would mainly affect the Bakerloo Line subway.

Of February 14 to 16the staff of more than 150 universities went on strike again, under the same conditions as during the strike on February 9 and 10.

Along with strikes by university staff February 14th, Welsh National Education Union teachers are on strike across the country. Many schools will close completely and in others some classes will not be taught.

HE February 16 and 17Northern Ireland paramedics called on strike for 48 hours by Unite Union.

HE February 20thit is paramedics in Wales and parts of England who will once again go on strike.

Teachers in Northern Ireland are called to strike in February 21str, for now for half a day. Many schools will probably not open their doors in the morning.

Universities staff will go on strike again from February 21 to 23.

Of February 22 to 24, the strike action will affect ambulance workers. HE February 22 will see paramedics in the North West of England go on strike. HE February 23 and 24 will be dedicated to the strikes by ambulance workers in Northern Ireland.

Return of the university staff strike February 27 and 28.

HE February 28 only, it will be the day of the teachers’ strike in the North, North West, Yorkshire and Humber in England.
