This new cleaning method could save water treatment plants from throwing away millions of cartridge filters each year, which could help them reduce the amount of plastic waste and meet their sustainability goals.

Over time, sediment buildup on cartridge filters creates physical and chemical fouling, leading to decreased performance. As a result, reverse osmosis (RO) plant operators must periodically replace cartridge filters to optimize membrane performance, creating a large amount of waste. In some plants, operators have to replace cartridge filters several times a year, or even every month; this leads not only to high costs, but also to significant losses due to these necessary interruptions. Some facilities may have as many as 20,000 cartridge filters and therefore have to deal with very long filter replacement delays.
