Great Britain: deportations continue – opinion

The new British prime minister already has one thing ahead of the chancellor: Liz Truss’s cabinet reflects the diversity of society much better than the ministerial team in Germany. For the first time in British history, no white man has one of the three key portfolios. The foreign minister’s mother is from Sierra Leone, the home minister’s mother is from Mauritius and the finance minister’s mother is from Ghana. They are not the only members of the government whose ancestors once emigrated to Britain. The British cabinet is a reflection of the country’s diversity in terms of race and gender. Diversity at the top of the state, often called for in Germany, is a reality in Britain. It’s okay.

Withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights? That is also conceivable

However, anyone who thinks that London’s government would be more cosmopolitan as a result is sorely mistaken. In the person of Suella Braverman, for example, is a new Home Secretary who is no less than her right-wing conservative predecessor, Priti Patel. She will continue to deport certain asylum seekers to Rwanda or elsewhere. She also won’t change the fact that people fleeing Ukraine must apply for a visa before arriving in the UK. If Braverman has his way, the UK should even withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights as soon as possible.

As diverse as Liz Truss’ cabinet is, it is politically even. The new prime minister has rallied strong Brexiteers around her, including many children of immigrants who, ironically, now make sure the borders stay as close as possible. Even under Liz Truss, Britain will continue to isolate itself in accordance with the Brexit ideology. The new British government will certainly not make it easy for people from all over the world to settle in this great country.
