Actually, Sunak should bring calm to the British government. But now a bullying scandal has rocked the cabinet.
The hopes of the calmer waters of the new Conservative British government appear to be crumbling just two weeks after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took office. Due to allegations of intimidation against Conservative minister Gavin Williamson, a government spokesman was forced to say on Monday that the prime minister had full confidence in the cabinet member.
Earlier, text messages from him to Conservative parliamentary caucus leader Wendy Morton had reached the public, in which the sometimes foul language put pressure on the party colleague. He was reportedly trying to get an invitation to Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September.
Sunak describes the news as ‘unacceptable’
According to a Sunday Times report, Williamson has since expressed regret at the news. Sunak welcomed this, but also described the news as “unacceptable.” Williamson sits at the cabinet table as Minister of State with no particular portfolio.
Williamson’s removal would raise new questions about the stability of a Conservative government. Sunak has only been in office since the end of October. The predecessor Liz Truss had to resign under pressure from her own faction due to failed fiscal policy. Read more about it here. Truss himself only replaced Boris Johnson as prime minister in early September.
