Italian police arrested a mob fugitive who had been on the run for nearly 20 years with the help of the Google Maps app, an investigator told Reuters on Wednesday. After a two-year investigation, Gioacchino Gammino, 61, was found in Galapagar, Spain, where he lived under a false name. The city is close to the capital Madrid. A street photo on Google Maps of a man who looked like him outside of a greengrocer was the key to initiating further investigation.
“The still helped us confirm the investigation that we were conducting in the traditional way,” said Nicola Altiero, deputy director of the Italian anti-mafia police unit (DIA).
Gammino, a member of a Sicilian mafia group nicknamed Stidda, had escaped from Rebibbia prison in Rome in 2002 and was sentenced to life in prison in 2003 for a murder committed several years earlier.
Altiero said that Gammino is currently detained in Spain and that they hope to bring him back to Italy at the end of February. Reuters was unable to locate a representative for Gammino for comment.
Recently, a Reddit user discovered a flying B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber plane on Google Maps. Shocked, right? Yes, as Tech Radar reported, a B-2 stealth bomber flying at a speed of 1,010 km / h was captured over cultivated fields in Missouri, USA. However, the image is slightly blurred due to the speed of the bomber. The colors red, green and blue can also be seen on the aircraft, as this is how satellites capture images. This frame was found by Redditor Hippowned.
However, this is not the first time a stealth bomber has been spotted on Google Maps. The plane had previously been seen parked on the runway at Whiteman Air Force Base. Although the difference between the two is that this is the first time an airplane has been captured in flight. An airliner was also seen in 2017 flying over the South Downs National Park in the UK. The plane featured the same color scheme: red, blue and green.
Google Maps has been around for 15 years, but the reason such unique things are now being detected is because of the constant updates to its images.
