The British government announced on Tuesday that it will postpone the introduction of full customs controls on imports from the European Union after Brexit. A ‘pragmatic’ approach given that the UK is already facing supply difficulties linked to the pandemic and rising shipping costs, especially in the agri-food sector. This is the second time that London has delayed these controls. In March, the British government decided to give itself six more months to allow companies to prepare.
“We want businesses to focus on their post-pandemic recovery rather than having to deal with new demands at the border, so we have set a new pragmatic timetable for the introduction of comprehensive border controls,” said Brexit Minister David Frost .
Certain controls on sanitary and phytosanitary products that were to be introduced on October 1 of this year and January 1, 2022, will not enter into force until July 2022. The date for the introduction of most customs controls will remain fixed in the January 1, 2022.
