As one of the UK’s first universities, Exeter will offer an “innovative” new direction from next year: that of “magical and occult sciences”. According to the university, this is necessary due to “the recent increase in interest in magic.”
The course is a 1-year postgraduate course that aims to study the history and impact of witchcraft and magic on society and science globally. The lectures will begin next year in September and will be given by professors of history, literature, philosophy, archaeology, sociology, psychology, theater and religion. It is quite unique in the UK, says the University of Exeter, to explore the topic of “magic” in such a broad context.
Course director Emily Selove says “decolonization, alternative epistemology, feminism and anti-racism are at the heart of the program.” But there are also elective subjects such as dragons in Western literature and art, the legend of King Arthur, paleography, Islamic thought, archaeological theory and practice, and the image of women in the Middle Ages.
Those who succeed will not only be able to imagine themselves as Harry Potter at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but will also obtain a master’s degree, awarded by the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies. “This master’s degree should allow people to critically examine the assumption that the West is the place of rationalism and science, while the rest of the world is a place of magic and superstition,” Selove said.
According to the university, with the diploma you can access many directions, such as education, counseling, the heritage and museum sector, libraries, tourism and the publishing world.
