Driving with a down jacket is prohibited this winter!

The Highway Code is sometimes full of quite grotesque rules: did you know, for example, that in the United Kingdom it is illegal to drive with a down jacket?

Each country has particularities in its Highway Code, sometimes with unusual regulations. As winter approaches, you'll be tempted to drive with your coat on to stay warm in the car. Be careful if you are wearing a down jacket: in the UK it is best to remove it before getting behind the wheel, otherwise you will be subject to fairly good !

Although there is no specific rule stating what can and cannot be used, the UK Highway Code does prohibit Clothing that may affect your ability to drive., like a particularly voluminous winter coat. However, the evaluation of their clothing is at the discretion of the police.

Driving with a down jacket: a very serious penalty

In fact, according to article 97 of the local Highway Code, all drivers must wear “footwear and clothing that do not prevent them from using the controls correctly.”

If your oversized jacket or inappropriate clothing causes you to lose control of the vehicle, you are exposed to a hefty fine, which could reach £5,000, or approximately €5,700. But that's not all: your driving license could even be 9 point amputeeand be suspended in the most serious cases, which could be tried!

Costumes are also prohibited.

This very strict regulation was implemented to avoid possible dangerous driving situations that can see the light for end-of-year celebrations: in fact, it also applies to costumes.

Forget big Christmas jumpers, fancy dress costumes or even Santa coats and boots if you plan to drive across the Channel for the holidays!
