Commander Beger took command of the crew three years ago. He was the first officer on board from 2015 to 2018.

The new “old man” becomes captain of the Petzsch frigate. He already gained experience on the F122 class frigates “Rheinland-Pfalz” and “Wilden 13”, on the frigate Augsburg, as well as on the staff of the 4th frigate squadron. “I hope, like many good commanders before me, to be able to successfully guide my crew through operational training and subsequent deployment,” Petzsch said. Due to his latest assignment as liaison officer for ship operational training in Great Britain, he knows what he is talking about: “I am very excited about the challenging task ahead of me as commander in the multi-crew team. model, which before It was unknown and unknown to me.”

He thanks his predecessor for his excellent work and personally wishes him all the best for the future.

Context information

The 4th Frigate Squadron leads the four Baden-Württemberg-class frigates and their eight crews. This unusual type of warship is designed for long-term stabilization missions in crisis zones.

In practice, this means large-scale maritime surveillance, such as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission off the coast of Lebanon or NATO activity in the Aegean. In similar missions, F125-class ships can detect and defend against hybrid threats, secure maritime supply routes with NATO and EU allies or lead large multinational naval formations.

Thanks to the multi-crew concept, ships can perform these tasks in their area of operation for up to two years without having to call at their home port. In a safe local port, crews typically rotate every four months.
