Canada men’s rugby team coach Kingsley Jones has announced the list of players who will face Brazil in the International Rugby Cup small final in La Vila.
The match will begin at Villajoyosa’s El Pantano Stadium on November 18 at 4 pm local time (7 am PST / 10 am EST). This will be the first time Canada faces Brazil in a test match outside of the Americas Rugby Championship. The two nations met last October in a non-selective development match, with Canada winning 31-14.
A number of changes were made to the Canadian team following last Saturday’s loss to Spain. Cole Keith will play at right prop following Djustice Sears-Duru’s injury, while Conor Young will start at left prop. Mason Flesch, Mitch Richardson and Andrew Coe will also start, while Conor Keys and Gabe Casey will be substitutes. Kainoa Lloyd will return to right wing for her first tour appearance after returning from injury.
Tyler Rowland, who recently extended his contract with the Toronto Arrows, and Cooper Coats, a member of Canada’s men’s rugby sevens team, will also join the group. Both players made their first international appearances for Canada’s men’s national rugby team against Wales in 2021 and return to competition with the team for the first time this season after recovering from long-term injuries.
Reid Watkins will have another chance to earn his first cap for Canada, with the Seattle Seawolves scrum-half starting on the bench for the second time in Spain.
“We were very disappointed with our performance against Spain, especially with our start to the match. The group has been working hard for the past few days, emphasizing mental preparation before anything we do. We need a good start against Brazil, said Kinglsey Jones. We are pleased with the focus, determination and commitment of all 32 players, and we have learned a lot about the group over the last two weeks. We know that must be reflected in our performance against a physical team and we expect Brazil to be equally hungry for victory on Saturday. »
