Borussia Dortmund remain at the top of the Bundesliga with a win against Mainz. VfL Bochum and Hertha BSC Berlin cheer in the basement at the table.

When Erling Haaland returned, Borussia Dortmund topped the Bundesliga table for at least one night. BVB won 3-1 (1-0) at home on Saturday’s matchday eight against FSV Mainz 05 and initially beat FC Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen, who will meet on Sunday. SC Freiburg failed 1: 1 (0: 1) against RB Leipzig to keep up with the Dortmunders. Newcomer VfL Bochum won the basement duel at SpVgg Greuther Fürth 1-0 (0-0), Hertha BSC won after two 2-1 (1-0) defeats at Eintracht Frankfurt. 1. FC Union Berlin defeated VfL Wolfsburg 2-0 (0-0). In the evening, a weakened replacement for VfB Stuttgart fought 1: 1 (1: 1) in Mönchengladbach.

Dortmund 2-1 Mainz

For the first time this season, BVB started dominant in a home game in front of some 60,000 spectators and was rewarded with the opening goal from captain Marco Reus (minute 3). The second goal came from striker Haaland on his comeback after a three-game break due to a bruised thigh with a hand penalty (54th). After Jonathan Burkardt’s connecting goal (87th), BVB had to shake again before Haaland made it all clear again in injury time (90th + 4).

Fürth – Bochum 0: 1

SpVgg Greuther Fürth failed to achieve the long-awaited first Bundesliga home win in the promotion match against VfL Bochum. Due to the late goal for the Revierclub by Anthony Losilla (80th), the gap between the bottom of the table and the rival, who rose to 15th at least for the moment, grew to six points.

Frankfurt – Hertha 1: 2

When sporting director Fredi Bobic and pro Kevin-Prince Boateng returned to their former club, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hertha won their third win of the season. Newcomer Marco Richter scored his first goal (7th), Joker Jurgen Ekkelenkamp increased (62nd). Goncalo Paciencia’s 1: 2 (78th / penalty) came too late for Frankfurt.

Freiburg – Leipzig 1: 1

At the opening of SC Freiburg in the new stadium, guests who had had a weak start to the season were helped by a penalty: Emil Forsberg scored from the point (32nd). The hosts pressed for the equalizer, Woo-yeong Jeong then scored SC’s first goal in the new arena (64th). Leipzig remains stuck in midfield as eighth in the table.

Union Berlin 2-0 Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg were the best team in Berlin for a long time, but the goals were scored by the hosts. Taiwo Awoniyi gave Union the lead (49th), Sheraldo Becker increased (83rd). The capital club climbed to fifth place with the victory and beat Lower Saxony.

Mönchengladbach – Stuttgart 1: 1

Stuttgart, who had to replace ten players with some crown and injury cases, went 1-1 (1-1) at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday night. In front of 41,608 spectators at Borussia-Park, Jonas Hofmann scored the equalizer (minute 42) after Konstantionos Mavropanos (15th) put the guests ahead (15th). This means that VfB continues to maintain the distance to the relegation zone. The Gladbachers, however, missed the third consecutive victory and the jump to an international starting position.
