Austria will host British Home Secretary Suella Braverman on Thursday (November 2) to share her country’s experience in outsourcing asylum applications to third countries.
The Austrian government is currently seeking to outsource asylum procedures to third countries, something the UK is currently doing under a controversial deal with Rwanda.
Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner told the Austrian Press Agency apa before the meeting “the great experience” of the UK in outsourcing asylum procedures could help the EU in the future.
The idea has recently gained traction in the bloc, and Germany is also considering a similar approach.
Given the “More and more countries follow the Austrian line”As Mr Karner noted on Tuesday (October 31), “It should also be possible to expand cooperation with third countries within the framework of the Pact on Migration and Asylum” of the EU.
“We will continue to work consistently for the European Commission to promote such asylum procedures outside Europe and thus make them possible. »
The agreement signed between the United Kingdom and Rwanda is of particular interest to Austria and could serve as a model for the EU, the Home Office added.
Under the new regime, people who the UK identifies as irregular migrants or asylum seekers can be deported to Rwanda to have their claims processed. If their application is accepted, they are granted asylum in this country and cannot come to the UK.
The plan is considered highly controversial as the UK Supreme Court is reviewing its legality after the Court of Appeal declared it illegal.
