“A Year on Our Earth” – New nature documentary series on Erste (new with corrected title). Cologne – Fire rollers, icy blizzards, huge storms with huge masses of water – the animal world around the world is exposed to ever-increasing forces of nature. How animal families defy these extreme conditions is what the four-part nature documentary series “A Year on Our Earth” (title corrected) is about. It can be seen in the German premiere in Primera starting on Monday, November 20, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. The series will be available in the ARD media library from November 13.
The series shows striking images of how animals around the world adapt to the changing seasons and cope with the resulting demands for their own survival. The voice of the film series is actor and comedian Christoph Maria Herbst. In his own style he describes, sometimes with compassion and sometimes with amusement, how animals cope with the constant changes in time, climate and the length of the day.
Three years of filming in 60 locations
Polar bears, pandas, the world’s largest turtles, magnificent birds of paradise, king penguins and red-footed monkeys: these stunning photographs were taken over three years in 60 different locations. Remotely controlled 8K cameras, modern underwater cameras and drones were used during filming. This allowed the teams to discreetly approach the animals, film them in their natural environment without disturbing them, and document animal behaviors never seen before. In more than 420 days of editing, several hours of film footage was used to create a series that shows stunning images of our planet and tells emotionally captivating animal stories.
Christine Strobl, ARD Program Director: “Monday at 8:15 p.m. is the time for the first documentary. Here we show our audience outstanding productions with social relevance and excellent nature films such as the series ‘A year on our Earth’. In stunning images, it tells of the families of animals on our Earth and the cycle of life as the seasons change: an eternal cycle of birth and death, of eating and being eaten.”
The series by the renowned English animal film producer Martha Holmes (which includes “Blue Planet” and “Planet Earth” for the BBC) by the Plimsoll production company was produced for the British broadcaster ITV and in co-production with WDR ( leader), NDR and ROE. In Britain, the series was a huge success on both streaming and linear television: between 1.7 and 1.9 million viewers watched it each week in prime time.
Accredited journalists can find all episodes and all episode descriptions in advance in the WDR screening room.
