a 4G connected triple lens dash cam

Two years have passed since Nextbase launched its Series 2 dash cameras and, coinciding with CES 2022, the UK-based manufacturer has announced what will follow.

The iQ is a line of connected dash cameras that provide a 540-degree view of your vehicle, whether you’re driving or parked. The unusual angle stems from the fact that it has three 180-degree lenses: one toward the front, one toward the rear (toward the inside of the car), and a third rear-window-mounted camera that captures everything behind.

This is Nextbase’s first fully connected model, with a built-in 4G SIM card to send alerts, location data, and live video streaming to your phone, wherever you are. As far as we know, this makes it the world’s first dash cam to offer 4K resolution, three lenses, and 4G connectivity.

Design-wise, the iQ is completely different from any previous Nextbase dashcam. For starters, it doesn’t have an LCD screen. This means that it relies more on the new Nextbase iQ app than previous models in the old app, although there is also a built-in voice assistant that allows you to control certain functions completely hands-free.

It is designed to sit behind your rear view mirror with the cockpit camera underneath, as you can see roughly in the image below.

Vocal assistant

Unlike the high-end Series 2 models, such as the 422, 522, and 622, the iQ will not have Amazon Alexa. Instead, Nextbase has developed its own custom assistant that can recognize specific commands so you can keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.

You will hear it through the speaker built into the windshield mount.

One of them allows you to use 4G connectivity to record and upload videos to the cloud in any situation where you feel vulnerable. This “witness mode” ensures that video evidence cannot be stolen or destroyed.

You can also put the iQ into ‘valet mode’ which will send you alerts when specific conditions are met, such as a change of location, when your car is being repaired, cleaned or parked and you are parked. that.

Security

Nextbase has also incorporated some Series 2 features, such as Emergency SOS, which will contact emergency services with your location if the vehicle is in a collision and you stand still for a while (and don’t pick up the phone).

There are other safety features, including alerts for vehicles in front of you that could pose a hazard and when you could pose a hazard to pedestrians on the road, for example.

There is also “Roadwatch AI” that monitors the speeds and trajectories of other vehicles and alerts the driver if they feel drowsy while driving.

Security

Thanks to the 4G connection, the iQ becomes even more useful as a safety device when your car is parked. Smart Sense Parking uses a combination of sensors: accelerometer and visual movement to determine when to alert you to events. You will receive a notification with a photo so you can decide if you want to see the live view to see what is happening in real time.

Here’s a mockup of what the new app will look like:

You can also track your vehicle’s location in real time using the built-in GPS.

Video

While the flagship model will have a 4K front-facing camera, the other two cameras record at 1440p and the resolutions drop as you go through the range. For now, Nextbase has not announced more information about the number of models offered or the characteristics of each.

Nextbase iQ release date

The iQ will go on sale in Fall 2022, but nothing has been announced in terms of pricing. Nextbase has confirmed that there will be a subscription for the iQ that will provide a certain number of minutes to remotely view the live camera feed and for the Emergency SOS service.

Richard Browning of Nextbase said: “In two years and from the ground up, we have redesigned what a dash cam can be and created the world’s first smart dash cam, using AI technology and cloud connectivity to provide drivers with a feeling of complete security. and security. There has never been a connected smart car product that offers so many benefits in one package. We’ve improved our already better dash cam functionality and added new technology to help drivers, whether they’re on the road or away from their vehicle.
