Just a week before the Brexit transition period between the UK and the European Union ends, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen managed to strike a last-minute deal. The horror scenario of a “hard” Brexit has been averted, but much is changing. How has Brexit affected foreign travel?
Do British people need a visa for Europe?
Even after Brexit, UK tourists will not need a visa to travel to Europe for a short stay. As long as the stay in Europe does not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period, you do not need a visa to travel to any of the countries of the European Union, nor to Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. If the trip lasts more than 90 days, a visa must be applied for.
However, this only applies to short tourist trips. Different rules may apply for business travel. While most countries will not require a visa for short business trips to the UK either, there are exceptions. It is the traveler’s responsibility to check prior to departure what the specific requirements are for providing services to EU countries after Brexit.
Do Dutch people need a visa to travel to the UK?
Dutch travelers can still travel to the UK without a visa. Citizens of EU member states only need to have a valid passport for the duration of their stay in the UK. One of the upcoming changes is that ID cards will no longer be accepted at UK airports from October 1, 2021. This means that a passport will be the only accepted form of ID for foreign visitors.
Changes in the TSE
European Health Cards, or EHICs, give travelers access to government-provided health care throughout Europe during their trip. In the UK, the EHIC has been replaced by the Global Health Insurance Card or GHIC.
Travel outside of Europe
Brexit will have limited consequences for British travelers when traveling to countries outside the European Union. Britain enjoys a number of privileges when it comes to traveling abroad. For example, British residents do not need a visa if they travel to the United States or Canada. For a trip to North America they can still use the ESTA for USA whether eTA Canada† Travelers from Great Britain can still travel to Vietnam without a visa for a maximum stay of 15 days. None of these agreements have been modified by Brexit.
