British justice decided on Tuesday, September 28, to arrest a man accused of the murder of Sabina Nessa, found dead last week in a London park, a case that has reactivated the debate on the safety of women.

Arrested on Sunday, Koci Selamaj, originally from Eastbourne (southern England) was charged on Monday night with the murder of the young woman. The 36-year-old appeared in London’s Willesden Magistrates Court on Tuesday, assisted by an Albanian interpreter. He is scheduled to appear again on Thursday, this time at the Old Bailey Criminal Court.

Koci Selamaj’s attorney, Aidan Harvey, said his client planned to plead not guilty. Sabina Nessa, a 28-year-old teacher from southeast London, disappeared on September 17 as she was leaving her home and heading to a bar a five-minute walk away. A passerby had found her body the next day, around 5:30 pm, hidden under a pile of leaves, according to the British press agency PA.

On Friday night, hundreds of people gathered in south east London for a moving vigil in honor of the teacher, provided with bouquets, candles or posters, in solidarity with the relatives of the victim. Sabina Nessa’s death comes a few months after that of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old Londoner who was attacked in the middle of the street and then murdered in early March on her way home. This case had upset the UK and reignited the debate about the safety of women in public space.
