More immigrants, fewer emigrants
Due to foreign migration, the difference between the number of immigrants and the number of emigrants, the population grew by 48.7 thousand inhabitants in the third quarter. In 2020 there were still 29.9 thousand. More immigrants arrived than last year, but less than in the peak year 2019. As fewer people left the Netherlands, the migration balance in the third quarter was even higher than in 2019. In particular, more young people aged 18 to 25 years joined through migration. than in previous years. In the summer months, the number of immigrants in this age group is usually relatively high.

Migratory balance of the first three quarters 78 thousand
Until September 2021 inclusive, 184.2 thousand immigrants arrived in the Netherlands and 106.1 thousand emigrants left the country. Altogether, therefore, 78.1 thousand inhabitants were added as a result of foreign migration. That was 25.4 thousand more than in the same period of 2020, and 9.5 thousand less than in 2019. Fewer people emigrated than a year ago, but slightly more emigrants of Dutch origin left.
Until September inclusive, Syrians are the largest group of migrants (8,000 in total). Poland follows in second place (7.6 thousand balance), with almost the same number of immigrants but fewer emigrants than a year before. In third and fourth place are migrants with a migratory background in countries of the former Soviet Union (balance 4.6 thousand) and Turkey (balance 4.3 thousand). Immigration from India has picked up again, while emigration is even lower than in previous years. The migration balance of migrants from the UK was negative, with more people leaving than emigrating. In 2015, the number of immigrants with an immigrant background in the UK has increased every year. As of 2020 this number has decreased.

More children were born, more people died
Since February, more children have been born each month than in previous years, especially in March and April. Also in the third quarter of 2021, a relatively large number of children were born, 47.9 thousand. Because a relatively large number of people also died (38.0 thousand), growth through natural increase (births minus deaths) in the third quarter was comparable to previous years. In 2021 this growth was 10.0 thousand, in 2020 it was 9.6 thousand inhabitants.
In total, 134.1 thousand children were born up to and including September, 6.8 thousand more than in the same period last year and also more than in 2019. 121.8 thousand people died, approximately the same as last year and 9, 3,000 more than in 2019.
