Brexit ends the European directive between France and the United Kingdom
A new agreement necessary for the continuation of automatic radar report exchanges
The good thing about automatic radars is that they provide continuous monitoring of drivers and allow the number of reports sent to be maximized. Logically all countries have begun to install it.
But with free movement and open borders in Europe, the states of the European Union quickly faced the problem of foreign drivers in their countries. To solve the problem, the EU implemented Directive 2015/413 to allow its members to facilitate the exchange of information about drivers in case an infringement is detected.
Thus, in recent years France has increased the number of agreements with other European countries to be able to prosecute and fine their nationals, but also so that French drivers can be fined abroad, thus limiting a form of impunity abroad that had allowed the famous Cannonball, Fawn Satanas and Diabolo, these clandestine car races on open roads in which drivers traveled at more than 200 km/h.
Although the list of currencies has only grown, the United Kingdom has come to change the situation. In fact, after Brexit, which came into force on January 1 after long months of negotiations, the European directive is obsolete for our friends on the other side of the Channel.
In other words, speeding committed by British drivers is no longer reported when detected by automatic devices in France. And the same goes for the French who would be exhibited in the archipelago. On the other hand, no driver is safe from controls carried out directly by the police.
In 2019, no less than 44,000 fines were issued to British drivers. There is no doubt that public authorities will try to reach a new agreement on this issue as soon as possible.
