National highway workers will go on strike from today until Christmas Day in the latest phase of the largest public servants union’s industrial action ahead of the Christmas season.
The strike involves members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union who work as traffic officers and regional hub officers, in London and south-east England.
The four-day strike by workers who plan, design, build, operate and maintain the roads follows action by colleagues in Yorkshire and the Humber, in the north-west and north-east of England.
PCS General Secretary Mark Serwotka said: “We are aware that our action is likely to inconvenience travelers, but even if we escalate before Christmas, we remind people that this dispute could be resolved today if the government put more money on the table.”
Earlier, health officials warned of the ripple effect across the NHS of two back-to-back strikes by frontline workers combined with mounting winter pressures.
Senior health officials said the “consequences of the strike are likely to spill over into the coming days” with high levels of urgent demand from patients delaying seeking care.
