From Thursday to Sunday, the United Kingdom celebrates the 70th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II: the platinum jubilee. Cartooning for Peace dedicates its cartoon week to this important event for the British monarchy.

Seventy years of reign. Thursday, June 2, The United Kingdom inaugurated the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, whose festivities will last four days. The sovereign’s recent health problems did not prevent her from appearing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, along with other members of the royal family, to greet the large and enthusiastic crowd.

But due to a “certain malaise” felt during the first day of celebrations, the queen will not attend the mass celebrating the 70th anniversary of her reign on Friday. All eyes will be on Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, who will make their first public appearance in the UK since leaving for the US.

Particularly appreciated by the British, Elizabeth II, who is now 96 years old, holds the record for longevity of a monarch in her country.

Although the British monarchy is criticized in many respects, Elizabeth II alone embodies a whole stretch of contemporary history.
