2021 – Norbert Himmler is elected as the new director of the public broadcaster by the ZDF television council. In March 2022, he will take over from Thomas Bellut, who has not run for another term.
2008 – Former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and 14 others are released by the army after six years of being held hostage by left-wing FARC rebels.
2003 – Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s EU Council presidency begins with a scandal: in his opening speech, he describes German SPD deputy Martin Schulz as “perfect” for the role of a concentration camp guard (“Kapo”) in a Nazi film.
2000 – Rudi Völler becomes the new team manager of the German national soccer team. Succeeds national coach Erich Ribbeck.
1993 – In the Turkish city of Sivas, Islamic fundamentalists burned down a hotel where Alevi writers, singers and intellectuals were attending a cultural event. More than 30 people die. Alevis are a religious minority in predominantly Sunni Turkey.
1988 – Steffi Graf wins the women’s final of the Wimbledon tennis tournament for the first time and is the second German after Cilly Aussem (1931). She defeated Martina Navratilova (USA) 5:7, 6:2 and 6:1.
1976 – North Vietnam and South Vietnam formally reunite as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The country was divided into a communist north and a western south for 22 years.
1963 – The Élysée Treaty on close Franco-German cooperation enters into force after approval by the Bundestag and the Bundesrat.
1928 – In Great Britain, the Franchise Equality Act gives women over the age of 21 the same voting rights as men. Since 1918, women over the age of 30 have been able to vote.
